Successful landscape projects often involve more than new plants. On this property, the homeowners wanted two key improvements: a refreshed landscape design and a better solution for managing water around the home. By combining landscape renovations with drainage upgrades, the project improved both the beauty and functionality of the property.
Project Goals
- Refresh outdated landscape beds and plantings.
- Improve overall curb appeal and property aesthetics.
- Create attractive and functional growing spaces.
- Improve drainage and water management around the home.
- Protect the foundation by directing water away from the property.
- Landscape Renovation and Plant Installation
The existing landscape was updated by removing overgrown and aging plant material and replacing it with a diverse selection of ornamental shrubs, perennials, and grasses designed for seasonal interest and long-term performance.
Planting improvements included:
- Removal of existing Euonymus, Spirea, and Roses.
- Installation of Ivory Halo Dogwoods.
- Installation of Little Quick Fire Hydrangeas.
- New Rose plantings.
- Penstemon Dark Towers additions.
- Backyard Landscape Enhancements
The backyard planting design was created to complement the patio and outdoor living spaces while adding texture, color, and visual interest throughout the growing season.
New backyard plantings included:
- Limelight Prime Hydrangeas.
- Catmint.
- Sesleria grasses.
- Karl Foerster grasses.
- Geranium Rozanne.
These layered plantings help create a balanced landscape design that will continue to mature and improve over time.
Custom Planter Boxes and Arched Trellis
One of the most distinctive features of the project was the installation of two custom metal planter boxes connected by an arched trellis.
Features included:
- Custom metal planter boxes assembled on-site.
- Decorative arched trellis connecting both planters.
- Custom soil and compost blend installation.
- Dedicated growing space for flowers, vegetables, herbs, and climbing plants.
- Unique focal point that enhances the landscape design.
- Landscape Bed Improvements
Additional upgrades were completed to improve the organization, appearance, and long-term maintenance of the landscape.
Enhancements included:
- Removal of outdated plastic edging.
- Redefining and reshaping planting bed lines.
- River rock installation.
- Mulch bed refresh.
- Improved landscape organization and visual appeal.
- Drainage and Water Management Improvements
To address water concerns around the property, approximately 90 feet of underground PVC drainage piping was installed and connected to the sump pump discharge system.
Drainage improvements included:
- Installation of approximately 90 feet of underground PVC pipe.
- Sump pump discharge extensions.
- Routing water away from the home’s foundation.
- Improved drainage toward the rear of the property.
- Reduced risk of water accumulation near the structure.
- Why Landscaping and Drainage Work Together
Healthy landscapes depend on proper drainage. Planting beds perform best when excess water can move efficiently through the property, while foundation drainage systems require dedicated pathways to prevent water from collecting near the home.
Benefits of combining landscape and drainage improvements include:
- Healthier plant growth.
- Reduced standing water.
- Improved foundation protection.
- Better long-term landscape performance.
- Increased property value and curb appeal.

- Landscape renovation and planting design.
